Here are some tips on packing, moving, and storing your belongings:

Packing and storing:
Get packing paper, pad for inventory, thick marking pens.
Heavy twine and packing tape.
Empty gasoline from lawn-mower, outboard motors, etc.
Remove batteries from toys or appliances.
Mark cartons clearly as to contents and room to be put in.
Set aside things you will carry in the car and mark "Do Not Load!".
Mark clearly the cartons you want loaded last and unloaded first.
Take a telephone book with you.
Tie or tape brooms, mops, curtain rods long handle garden tools in bundles.
Point out and mark especially fragile or delicate items.
Carry currency, jewelry and valuable papers yourself.
Do not overload drawers when packing items in dressers.
Blankets are best moved in large boxes; towels and pillows may be packed in dresser drawers.
Large mirrors, glass table tops and pictures should be crated or customed boxed.
Books should be packed on edge, in small boxes.
Carton weight should not exceed 60 IBS.
All boxes should be secured and taped.
Pack lampshades in boxes by themselves.
Do NOT use newspaper to pack anything; the ink rubs off.
Do not leave shelves loose in either the fridge or stove.
Small appliances should be wrapped and packed in the bottom of boxes.
    Heavy Boxes - Use extra tape on bottom of box.
Do not pack cleaning products in the same box as food.
Place heavy china items at the bottom of the box; all flat pieces should be placed on edge.
    Heavy Boxes - Use extra tape on bottom of box.
Small items should be packed in a small box inside a larger one.
Move clothes in a wardrobe box supplied by the movers.
Drapes may be moved in a wardrobe box too.
Do not roll mattresses or rugs;leave them for the movers.
Do not wrap articles of furniture or tie them with a rope, leave them in a place for movers to move.
Large power tools should be dismantled for moving.
We reccomend having "Storage" Insurance.






Before you move:
Make daily schedules.
Get estimates from moving companies and arrange method of payment.
Be sure the movers are a licensed company.
Purchase boxes and packing tape.
Sell, give away, discard unnecessary belongings.
Transfer or resign club or association memberships.
Get school records for transfer to new schools.
Get all medical, dental, birth, baptism and marriage records.
Transfer house, car & personal insurance records.
Check storage facilities.
Ensure that your moving out & moving in days do not conflict with the other two parties.
Arrange for connection and shutting off of utilities & cable co.
Dispose of flammable items.
Defrost fridge and clean stove the day before moving.
If renting, make arrangements with management for elevator use or special loading areas.
Use or discard perishable foods.
Arrange to transport pets, plants and perishables.
Clean rugs and drapes.
Arrange for any work that has to be done at new home.
Get warranties and tips form previous owners of new home.
Arrange for someone to look after your children and pets on moving day.
Get moving company appraisals of items for future claims.
Cancel cleaning women, gardner, maintenance workers, etc.
Transfer prescriptions for drugs and eyeglasses.
Transfer health & hospital plans.
Return library books, cancel or reroute card.
Transfer stocks, bank accounts, contents of safety deposit box.
Ensure you have adequate insurance for goods in transit.
Notify post office, send out change of address cards to companies to inform them of your move:
    insurance, mail order clubs, telephone, electric company, gas company, newspaper, magazines,
    lawyer, doctor, dentist, community center, accountant, stockbroker, cable television, motor vehicle
    branch, credit card companies, motor club.







Leaving:
Have the meters read.
Be on hand for the movers.
Keep personal luggage away from the movers.
Arrange for a few favorite toys for your children. Put all valuables in a safe place.
Get the floor plan of your new home, if possible.
Arrange for supplies for transition period.
Make shopping list for first day.
Do a "walk through" at your new home with your Realtor & get the keys to your new home.
Disconnect the phones.
Notify police and neighbors.
Turn down the heat.
Have necessary papers, travelers cheques, money, tickets, documents, etc. with you.
Final check of cupboards, rooms, basement, garage, attic.
Remove the trash.
Ensure doors & windows are locked.
Keep copy of mover's inventory with you in case of serious loss or damage.


Arriving
Have children & pets elsewhere, if possible.
Check each carton for damage or loss & list claims, if any.
Get appliances hooked up.
Utilities should be turned on and meters read.
Get kitchen & bedrooms set up first.
